The Three Rules That Matter Most
- MESH HOLDING CONTAINERS ARE BANNED. Use acrylic floating boxes with large vertical slit vents. Fine mesh clogs with bacterial film within days, the oxygen crashes, and there is no way to see it happening from the outside. This has killed seven fish here. Containers with mesh on the sides as well as the bottom fail the same way, because it is the size of the holes that blocks, not how many there are. Do not put an air line inside a holding container. The fish get bombarded. The air line goes in the bin the containers stand in, not in the containers.
- Every quarantine system is dosed with ammonia neutraliser twice a day, morning and evening. Quarantine tanks have no working filter, so waste builds up with nothing to remove it.
- Livestock from different suppliers never share water, nets, cups, siphons or buckets. Not in either direction, not once.
Before the Box Arrives
Have all of this ready on the bench
- A clean bin or tub, large enough to stand the containers in
- A heater for the bin
- An air pump and one air line, for the bin only
- One acrylic floating box with large vertical slit vents per pair, each with a lid. No mesh containers.
- One clean pot or mug per container
- A permanent marker and labels
- Ammonia neutraliser
- Methylene blue
- The Hanna meter
- A net, a cup and a siphon that belong to this batch only
- A bucket of aerated seawater at the same temperature and salinity as the receiving system
Steps
- Fill the bin with water from the system the fish will be going into.
- Set the heater to that system's temperature.
- Put an air line in the bin.
- Write the pair name on each container with the marker before anything goes in.
- Put one pot or mug in each container.
- Do not put an air line in the containers. The bin has one, the containers do not.
- Check that nothing inside a container can shift and cover the vent slits.
Acclimating Fish
Work fast
The fish have been in a sealed bag for a day or more. Every extra minute in bag water costs more than moving them quickly does.
Steps
- Open the box. Keep the lights in the room low.
- Take out one bag at a time. Leave the others in the box.
- Open the bag just enough to dose.
- Add ammonia neutraliser to the bag water, dosed for the amount of water in the bag.
- Open the bag fully and let it stand for one minute.
- Float the bag in the bin for 10 to 15 minutes so the temperature matches.
- Catch the fish with the net, keeping the net under the water, then scoop it out of the net with the cup.
- Lower the cup into the labelled container and let the fish swim out.
- Throw the bag water away. Never pour bag water into a tank or a container.
- Move on to the next bag.
Why the neutraliser goes in first
While the bag is sealed, waste in the water is in a harmless form. Opening the bag lets gas escape, the water changes, and that waste turns into a form that burns the fish. This happens within minutes of opening. The neutraliser stops it.
If the salinity is different
- Measure the bag water with the Hanna meter.
- Measure the receiving system.
- If the difference is 3 ppt or less, transfer straight across.
- If the difference is more than 3 ppt, drip water from the receiving system into the bag over 30 to 45 minutes, then move the fish across.
If a fish is gasping, on its side, or barely moving
- Do not drip acclimate it. Match temperature only.
- Get it into the receiving water as fast as you can.
- Give it the largest volume available, not a small container.
- Turn the lights off.
- Leave it alone. Do not keep checking it.
Methylene blue bath
Every new fish gets a methylene blue bath. It is gentle, it covers scrapes picked up in transit, and it helps a stressed fish take in oxygen.
- Fill a separate container with water from the receiving system.
- Add methylene blue to the dose on the bottle.
- Put an air line in.
- Put the fish in for the time stated on the bottle.
- Move the fish out with the cup and into its holding container.
- Throw the bath water away.
Acclimating an Anemone
Steps
- Open the bag and add ammonia neutraliser to the bag water.
- Float the bag for 15 minutes so the temperature matches.
- Measure the bag water and the receiving system with the Hanna meter.
- If the difference is more than 2 ppt, drip water from the system into the bag over 45 to 60 minutes.
- Lift the anemone out by hand, supporting the underside. Do not pull it, and do not use a net.
- Place it on the bottom of the receiving tank in a low-flow spot.
- Throw the bag water away.
- Turn the lights down for the first day.
Where to place it
| Anemone | Placement |
|---|---|
| Haddoni anemone | On the sand, in a low-flow area. No direct pump flow on the foot. |
| Gigantea anemone | Bright light, around 300 PAR. Strong flow. |
| Magnifica anemone | Bright light and strong flow. They climb rather than sit on the sand. |
Rules
- One anemone per system.
- Guard every pump intake before the anemone goes in.
- Do not feed it for the first three days.
- Do not move it once it has been placed. Let it choose where to settle.
Not attached is normal
A new anemone can take weeks to stick down, and can move around and let go again before it settles. This is not a sign of a problem on its own. Judge it on the signs listed on the Treatment page.
Looking After Quarantine
Ammonia neutraliser, twice every day
A quarantine container has no working filter. Nothing in it removes fish waste, so it builds up until the water is changed.
- Work out the volume of the container or tank in litres.
- Dose the amount stated on the bottle for that volume.
- Do this every morning and every evening, every day the fish are in quarantine.
This is not a substitute for testing or for water changes. It buys time between them.
Every day
- Dose ammonia neutraliser, morning and evening.
- Check the bin air line is still bubbling, and check the vent slits on every container are clear.
- Look at the fin edges of every fish under a white light.
- Photograph every pale pair, and every longfin, from the same angle.
- Test the ammonia.
- Feed, and siphon out whatever is not eaten.
- Write anything unusual in the Observations box on the Parameter Log.
Every three days
- Lift each container out and look at the vent slits.
- Wipe the slits clear of any film or debris.
- Check nothing inside has shifted across them.
Containers are for hours, not weeks
A container is somewhere to hold a fish while it settles, not somewhere to keep it. Move each pair into a real tank as soon as one is free.
Tell Michael the same day if you see any of these
- A fin edge that has gone white, cloudy or fuzzy, or has stringy threads hanging off it
- A fin that is shorter or more damaged than it was three days ago
- A white haze on a fish
- A fish breathing fast, sitting on the bottom, or lying on its side
- A fish that has not eaten for two days
- A fish that takes food and spits it out
- Two fish fighting hard enough to damage each other
- An anemone opening and closing repeatedly
- The bin air line has stopped bubbling
- A container whose vent slits look blocked, filmed over or dirty
- Hanna
